If you are sexually active, it is a good idea to get STI testing done when you have a new sexual partner or are pregnant. If you have more than one sexual partner, you should consider having STI testing done regularly to keep you and your partner(s) safe i.e. every 3 months.
The major concern with STIs is that you may have an infection and pass it on to others without having any symptoms. If left untreated, some STIs can cause major health problems including pelvic pain, pregnancy complications, pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, heart disease, and cancer.
The good news is that most STIs are treatable. The sooner you find out you have an infection, the sooner you can get started with treatment. If you test positive for one of these conditions, our medical director will contact you by phone. If it is treatable with a prescription medication, we can send a prescription to your local pharmacy. If it requires additional testing or a longer-term treatment, our medical director will walk you through the process.
At Direct Health Solutions, we offer STI testing in the comfort and convenience of your home or office or our office. If you don’t have a provincial healthcare number or do not wish to provide it, don’t worry – we’ve got you covered. Just let our receptionist know and we’ll tell you how it works. There will be an additional cost to STI tests without an attached provincial health care number.
It is important to note that although we respect and protect your personal information when you have STI testing done through our clinic, we must follow the laws. In Alberta, some infections are reportable to public health. The following STIs are reportable:
If you test positive for one of these infections, we are required to provide your information to the provincial STI services program. Your partners will also be contacted by nurses to recommend they get tested and treated for these infections. This is a confidential process and no names or personal information will be given to your partners. If you have any questions, please contact our office.
Our standard STI testing includes both urine and blood samples to test for:
Pricing for Standard STI tests is $125 for one person plus $75 for each additional person during the same appointment.
HPV is known to cause cervical cancer and genital warts. We offer HPV testing for anyone with a cervix by the means of a vaginal swab. Your sample will be sent to a private lab within Canada. Results are expected within 2 weeks.
Introductory price for HPV testing is $125 if it is added-on to another appointment or $200 as an individual test.
Note that the test is not appropriate during menstruation, during pregnancy, or within 3 months after pregnancy to support accuracy of your results.
We can provide testing for an active HSV (herpes simplex virus) infection through a swab of an open sore. If you are interested in finding out if you’ve had previous exposure to HSV, we may also test your blood for antibodies.
Please request a phone consultation with one of our providers if you’re interested in this test.
If you have symptoms or concerns, instead of requesting an STI test, perhaps you should schedule a medical appointment with one of our medical staff to complete an assessment and determine which tests would be more appropriate for you. Medical appointments start at $198 for in-person appointments (helpful for assessing physical symptoms) or $50 for phone- or virtual-appointments.
